5 Bang for your buck cosmetic treatments by dermatologist Dr Davin Lim
Chemical peels: Retinoid Peels, AHA peels – Lactic acid or Glycolic acid peels. Salicylic acid peels or BHA peels are best for congested skin. Consumable costs for peels are much less than lasers, hence why they are one of the best ‘bang for your buck’ treatments. My pick would be the retinoid peels. Why? Because unlike AHA peels that require a step up program, for suitable patients you can start at 1-2% Retinoic Acid. Peels start at around 90-100 dollars. 3-5 peels over 3-6 months will make a bigger difference in your skin compared to skin care / creams.
Fractional Laser – Clear & Brilliant is a mini Fraxel. One of the best ‘Bang for your Buck’ treatments, especially in the 1927 Diode delivered wavelength (Permea). A good operator will concentrate the card energy to where the problem is. (For example crow’s feet for wrinkles, or spots of pigmentation). This laser is gentle & more predictable than say a Picolaser. Picolasers are dependent on the skin type, whilst fractional laser in this setting is not limited to skin of colour.
Dysport or Xeomin, over Botox. Botox is the market leader for muscle relaxants. Performed correctly it can do wonders. For crow’s feet you do not need to use much Botox to get a good result. Infinitely more predictable than say eye cream ! Following Botox, dermal fillers are more expensive, however in general they last longer than Botox; typically 1-3 years for Hyaluronic Acid fillers, longer for collagen stimulating fillers
Eyebrow feather tattooing – Feathertouch Typically lasts 9 to 18 months with an outlay of between 400 to 900 Dollars. Touch ups every 12-18 months are usually a fraction of the initial costs. IMO the brows frame the eyes, and rank within the top 5 of my picks.
Microneedling is a form of CIT or collagen induction therapy. 3 ways to microneedle. Firstly with a skin roller or dermaroller. Done safely in the context of skin type & clinical indications, rolling can give good results. Dermapen, SkinPen or vertical delivery is the most commonly practiced needling procedure. Dermastamping is also a vertical delivery of needles, less popular with clinicians. CIT as the name suggest can improve enlarged pores, pigmentation (not melasma), wrinkles & scars.

Well I’m sold on the laser because 4 months for results with topicals would cost the same as one laser treatment.
Mousy Leigh
Yes! I’ve always wondered what treatments give me the best results for the price. Thanks.

Thanks for putting a summary in the intro. Much appreciated

All these procedures are much more affordable when you switch to simple cost effective skincare like cerave cleanser , moisturizers and sunscreens, you will have plenty left over for Botox 😁

so true. expensive skincare products are so unnecessary when the same ingredients can be purchased at much lower price points. ingredients are the only thing that matters, not pretty labels with a large marketing budget advertising the products!

Sandra L you’re so right. 👌
My Twilight Zone
So true! What bugs me is claiming that $27au for 0.05 retinol isn’t as beneficial or cost effective as a few peels? Doesn’t make sense to me. The retinoid prescription creams last months and months. This doesn’t make sense.

well, you look like a man in your twenties, so I figure you must have some clue what you’re talking about.

Hi Davin, I love this concept of bang for your buck. You talked a lot about wrinkles and crows feet but at 61yo my main concern is slackening of the skin around the jawline. What is the best bang for my buck to treat this concern. I suppose I’m looking to induce collagen production. I would really appreciated your reply🙏🏻

Thank you for including eyebrow tattooing. Eyebrows make such a difference. Imagine if you didn’t have any?😊😊. Future videos, open pores please🙂. I have open pores that need their own postcode😓

Dr. Lim, can the skin barrier always repair itself from over washing/exfoliating? If it was healthy before that

The most bang for buck for me is laser hair removal. Had it done years ago and the cost was totally worth it since I haven’t needed hair removal products (not to mention the effort and skin irritation) for years. That baby will pay itself off in a jiffy. I won’t be this confident and carefree if it wasn’t for laser hair removal. Very much worth it

How many sessions did u get done
Assoma muhamed
Absolutely especially if you have dark hair its so obvious Even when its very short
Rosy Ruberto
I ve been doing laser for the past 4 years I m Italian so I ve got right color skin colour and dark hair and the laser doesn’t work on my face, I ve done every single check to see If I got something that doesn’t work properly but the blood test was all perfect is just not working for me I actually have more hair than before🙄
Assoma muhamed
@Rosy Ruberto face is the toughest area, its need more sessions and the final realistic result is fuzzy hair never zero hair

I really love this video! I love that you’ve asked your peers what they think is ‘bang for the buck’. Such a good video format

Wow, dude you rock! Thanks for all the honest input!😊

I’ve spent 3k on empty promises from other dermatologist selling me the dream. I felt like I was a money sign rather than a patient or client. Tbh you are the only doctor I feel like I can trust. ♥️
My Twilight Zone
Ari Tawera , what really sux is he never mentions referrals for your area. I’ve been asking for ages. Sadly with no reply.
Ari Brown
@My Twilight Zone actually before covid 19 I went online to his clinic and tried to book an appointment and they never got back to me. Im kinda thinking maybe this for the views and likes. One gets coin for all of f them. 🙄 Maybe not so trusting after all . 🤷 Thanks for replying to my message. I seen he replies to others but oh well. 😬
Ari Brown
@My Twilight Zone my face would be a challenge for him anyways… Probably not worth it heh
My Twilight Zone
Ari Tawera , no way, the problem is he could definitely do it for you. There’s no such thing as to challenging. He’s just gotten so big that he’s so busy. He’s definitely worth it! Which is why I’ve been begging him for trusted(Dr.Lim) referrals, but I never get an answer. It really sux.
Do you mind me asking what country you’re in ? Only because there’s an amazing site called acne.org and it’s not bias, no docs/derma allowed. Only real people’s stories, referrals from all over. But I’m pretty sure it’s a U.S site. I’ll be checking it out myself tomorrow. Good luck hun.

@My Twilight Zone he’s from Australia I live in Australia …

what about a neck lift vs lasers, botox, peels? Any thoughts?

Wish the US costs would be the same. If I got a peel here, I’m sure it would be waaaaay more money.

Finally someone talking about treatments. Yay!!! As much as I like skincare I feel like dermatologists and people on YouTube don’t talk about treatments enough. Thank you!!!!
Chelsea Sehon
I’d love to have you for a husband. 😩 My skin would be amazing. 😭

I love the bang for your buck.
It’s definitely what a lot of us need. 👏🏼
THANK YOU FOR HELPING US!

This is outstanding content. Thank you.
There’s a prevailing attitude that “you need at least $1500/a series of 3-6 of anything for it to be worthwhile,” which has always discouraged me from having a consult with a cosmetic dermatologist.
If I can ask for a follow-up video: how should a person go about finding a cosmetic dermatologist or skilled aesthetician?

Dr. Davin Lim is such a living legend in the acne scar revision space, I love you man, thanks for helping us!

If you are able to go to university, you are not poor. Not having a roof over your head or not having three meals a day, that makes a person poor.
